Down the Rabbit-Hole

“Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversations?”.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

by Lewis Carroll, 1865.

The story of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” inspired me to produce this theatrical body of work that reflects her long journey down the rabbit hole, where she discovers an extraordinary world of unusual characters and encounters a series of unforeseeable situations.  I wanted to compose images that represent Alice’s own imagination by producing photographs that dramatically convey an illusion like the same way we see or feel when we dream.   I chose to use the Holga. This cheap plastic camera is unpredictable but can produce extraordinary imagery. Soft focus, multiple-exposure capability and intense vignetting, all are features which aesthetically allows the freedom to enhance my creative expression.

This work series follows the character illustrations designed by John Tenniel from the original “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.

The background music is from the original soundtrack recording of the 1972 production of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.  It was composed by John Barry and Lyrics by Don Black. As Alice,  Fionna Fullerton sings  Curiouser and Curiouser”.  Movie producer Josef Shaftel and writer-director William Sterling followed Carroll’s original text and Tenniel’s classic illustrations.
